The Marathi calendar (and the broader Hindu Panchang) follows the traditional lunar solar calendar based on Sanskrit month names. There are 12 months in the Marathi year, starting with Chaitra (चैत्र) and ending with Phalgun (फाल्गुन). These months are based on the position of the moon and do not directly align with English calendar months but overlap with them.

The Marathi New Year begins on the first day of Chaitra (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada). This day is celebrated as Gudi Padwa (गुढी पाडवा) — one of the most important festivals in Maharashtra. A 'Gudi' (a decorated stick with a bright cloth, neem leaves, and a copper/silver vessel) is erected at the entrance of homes to welcome the new year. It usually falls in March–April of the English calendar.
