Ashfaqulla Khan is one of the most revered martyrs of the Indian independence movement. He was a fearless revolutionary, a poet, and a prominent member of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA). Name: Ashfaqulla Khan.
Born: October 22, 1900 (Shahjahanpur, UP).
Organization: Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).
Major Event: Masterminded and executed the Kakori Train Action (1925).
Martyred: Hanged by the British on December 19, 1927.
Ashfaqulla Khan was born on October 22, 1900, in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. From a young age, he was deeply moved by the atrocities committed by the British Empire. Initially, he supported Mahatma Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement. However, when Gandhi suddenly called off the movement after the Chauri Chaura incident in 1922, Ashfaqulla, like many other angry youths, believed that armed rebellion was the only way to drive the British out of India.
Ashfaqulla Khan joined forces with Ram Prasad Bismil, a fellow poet and revolutionary. Despite belonging to different religions, their bond was incredibly strong, serving as a shining symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity against the British. Together, they formed the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) to organize an armed revolution.
To fund their armed rebellion, the HRA needed money to buy weapons. On August 9, 1925, Ashfaqulla Khan, Ram Prasad Bismil, Chandrashekhar Azad, and other revolutionaries executed a daring plan. They stopped a British government train near Kakori (near Lucknow) and looted the treasury bags containing government money. This event shook the British administration.
The British launched a massive manhunt. Ashfaqulla Khan managed to evade capture for over a year but was eventually betrayed by a friend and arrested in Delhi. During his trial, the British offered to release him if he testified against Bismil, but he fiercely refused. On December 19, 1927, at the young age of 27, Ashfaqulla Khan was hanged at the Faizabad jail. He kissed the hangman's noose with a smile, becoming a permanent hero in Indian history.
Ashfaqulla Khan was an Indian revolutionary and freedom fighter who fought against British rule as a prominent member of the Hindustan Republican Association.
He is most famous for executing the daring Kakori Train Robbery in 1925 alongside Ram Prasad Bismil to loot British treasury funds for the freedom struggle.
His closest friend and comrade was Ram Prasad Bismil. Their friendship is celebrated as a prime example of Hindu-Muslim unity during the freedom struggle.
