Why was it Important?

The Silent Valley (Sairandhrivanam) is one of the last remaining virgin tropical rainforests in India — never disturbed by human settlement. It is home to the endangered Lion-tailed Macaque and contains over 1,000 species of plants, birds, and animals found nowhere else on Earth.

In 1973, the Kerala government planned a hydroelectric dam across the Kunthi River running through the valley. If built, the dam would have flooded and permanently destroyed this precious ecosystem.

The Campaign

Scientists, writers, poets, and citizens launched a massive public protest. The Kerala Shastra Sahitya Parishad (KSSP) — a people's science movement — played a critical leadership role.

The movement gained national attention. The famous poet and lyricist Sugathakumari became the voice of the campaign, writing powerful poetry demanding protection of the forest.

Victory

In 1983, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi cancelled the dam project and declared Silent Valley a National Park. It was formally inaugurated as Silent Valley National Park in 1985.
