Key Facts

In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna emphasizes the supreme sweetness and importance of the Sama Veda by saying: 'Of the Vedas I am the Sama Veda' (Vedanam Samavedo'smi).

What is the Sama Veda?

The word 'Sama' means 'song' or 'melody', and 'Veda' means 'knowledge'. Therefore, the Sama Veda is the Veda of Melodies and Chants.

While the Rigveda contains prayers (mantras), the Sama Veda contains the musical notations and rules on exactly how those mantras should be sung during religious sacrifices and rituals (Yajnas).

Connection to the Rigveda

The Sama Veda has very little original text of its own. Out of its 1,875 verses, almost all (except about 75) are taken directly from the Rigveda.

It essentially took the verses of the Rigveda and rearranged them into a musical format to be sung by a special class of priests called the Udgatar.

Importance in Indian Culture

The Sama Veda is considered the absolute root of the Hindustani and Carnatic classical music traditions. It introduced the concept of the seven musical notes (Swaras: Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni) and the concept of rhythm (Taal).
