India is a land of vibrant festivals deeply connected to astronomy and agriculture. One of the most colorful and thrilling festivals is Uttarayan, a day when the sky is completely taken over by millions of fighting kites.
Unlike most Hindu festivals (like Diwali or Holi) which change dates every year because they follow the Lunar (Moon) calendar, Uttarayan/Makar Sankranti follows the Solar (Sun) calendar, which is why it falls on the exact same date (Jan 14) almost every single year!
The word Uttarayan comes from Sanskrit:
Uttarayan is celebrated every year on January 14th (and sometimes the 15th). In the Hindu calendar, this specific day is celebrated across all of India under different names. In North India and Maharashtra, it is called Makar Sankranti; in Tamil Nadu, it is Pongal; and in Assam, it is Bihu.
While the whole country celebrates Sankranti, the state of Gujarat celebrates Uttarayan with unmatched passion through kite flying (Patangbazi).
People bask in the mild winter sun and eat foods that keep the body warm. The most famous treats are Chikki (a hard sweet made of jaggery and peanuts/sesame seeds) and Undhiyu (a spicy mixed vegetable dish native to Gujarat).
Historically, flying kites was a fun excuse to force people out of their dark houses and onto their sunny rooftops. Basking in the mild, early morning winter sun helps the body soak up Vitamin D and fights off winter skin infections.
