Stanza 1 — The Children The poem opens with a description of the children sitting in a classroom in a slum. They are pale, thin, malnourished, and their faces look like 'rootless weeds'. A boy with squinted eyes dreams of distant squirrels. The children are too poor and defeated to dream boldly.

Stanza 2 — The Classroom Walls The classroom walls are decorated with pictures of Shakespeare, maps showing beautiful places, and a photo of a building with domes. The poet points out the bitter irony — these images of a beautiful, prosperous world mean nothing to children trapped in dirty, narrow slum alleys.

Stanza 3 — The Contrast The contrast between the world on the maps and the children's actual world is devastating. The children's 'world' is fog, the slum street, cramped conditions, and the 'slag heap' (ash heap). Their sky is just a strip visible through a narrow window.

Stanza 4 — The Poet's Appeal Spender appeals to the powerful — governors, inspectors, visitors — to open the windows of the world for these children. Education, books, and sunlight must reach the slum. The children should be allowed to run in the green fields — 'History theirs whose language is the sun.'
