In the grand Indian epic, the Mahabharata, surrounded by massive warriors like Bhishma, Karna, and Arjuna, stands a man who fought no physical battles but was considered the wisest and most respected man in the entire kingdom. His name was Mahatma Vidur.
According to Hindu mythology, Vidur was not an ordinary human. He was the human incarnation (Avatar) of Yamaraja (The God of Death and Justice), who was cursed by a sage to be born on Earth as a mortal.
Vidur was the Prime Minister (Maha-Mantri) of the Kuru Kingdom (Hastinapur). He was the half-brother of the blind King Dhritarashtra and King Pandu. Throughout the epic, he acts as the ultimate voice of Truth, Justice (Dharma), and moral conscience, constantly warning the King about the evil actions of his son, Duryodhana.
Vidur's birth is a fascinating story. Queen Satyavati asked the great sage Veda Vyasa to bless her two widowed daughters-in-law (Ambika and Ambalika) with sons.
Despite being the wisest and healthiest of the three brothers, Vidur was disqualified from ever sitting on the throne of Hastinapur purely because he was born to a maidservant, not a royal queen. However, Bhishma recognized his immense genius and appointed him as the Prime Minister.
When the massive Kurukshetra war was about to begin, a terrified and sleepless King Dhritarashtra called Vidur to his chambers at midnight for advice. The long philosophical conversation that took placeтАФwhere Vidur explained the rules of statecraft, ethics, proper conduct, and the difference between right and wrongтАФis documented in the Mahabharata as the famous Vidur Niti (The Policies of Vidur).
Vidur was an absolute follower of Dharma. Even though he worked for the Kauravas (Dhritarashtra), his heart and secret support were always with the **Pandavas**, because he knew they were on the side of truth. He even saved the Pandavas' lives during the Lakshagriha (House of Wax) fire trap.
