Key Facts

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan founded the Translation Society (later called the Scientific Society) in 1864 at Ghazipur. Its purpose was to translate major scientific and historical works from English into Urdu so the common people could read them.

Background and Need

Following the Revolt of 1857, the Muslim community in India faced severe backlash from the British. Furthermore, orthodox religious leaders advised Muslims to boycott Western education and English learning, believing it was anti-Islamic.

As a result, Muslims fell far behind Hindus in education, government jobs, and socio-economic progress. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan realized that without modern education (science and English), the community would remain backward and impoverished.

Objectives of the Aligarh Movement

  1. Promote Western Education: To persuade the Muslim community to embrace English and modern sciences.
  2. Loyalty to the British: To remove the British government's hostility towards Muslims by proving their loyalty, ensuring better job opportunities.
  3. Social Reforms: To abolish social evils like the purdah system, polygamy, and fatalism among Muslims.
  4. Religious Rationalism: Sir Syed advocated a rational approach to Islam, stating that the "Word of God (Quran) must be in harmony with the Work of God (Nature)."

The Founding of MAO College

The crowning achievement of the Aligarh Movement was the establishment of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College at Aligarh in 1875.

  • It was modeled after Oxford and Cambridge universities.
  • It provided modern education in English alongside Islamic theology.
  • In 1920, MAO College was elevated to the status of a university and became the famous Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Impact of the Movement

The movement completely transformed the social and political landscape of India. It produced a new generation of educated Muslim professionals, lawyers, and politicians. However, it also fostered a distinct political identity among Muslims, which eventually contributed to the demand for a separate electorate.
