Present Indefinite Tense (Simple Present)

The Present Indefinite Tense (also known as the Simple Present Tense) is the most basic and frequently used tense in the English language. It is used to state facts, habits, and daily routines.

Question (Click to Flip)

Why do we use 'es' in 'He goes' but 's' in 'He plays'?

Answer

If a verb ends in -o, -ch, -sh, -ss, -x, or -z (like go, catch, wash, miss), we add '-es'. For most other verbs (play, run, eat), we just add '-s'.

Key Facts

A common mistake is adding 's/es' in negative/question sentences. WRONG: 'He does not plays.' RIGHT: 'He does not play.' Once 'does' is in the sentence, the main verb stays in its base form.

When to use Present Indefinite?

  1. Habits and Routines: I wake up at 6 AM.
  2. Universal Truths: The sun rises in the east.
  3. General Facts: Water boils at 100°C.
  4. Scheduled Future Events: The train leaves at 5 PM.

(In Hindi, sentences ending with 'ता है, ती है, ते हैं' (ta hai, ti hai, te hain) generally translate to Present Indefinite).

Rules and Structure

1. Affirmative (Positive) Sentences

  • Rule: Subject + V1 (s/es) + Object
  • Note: Add 's' or 'es' to the verb ONLY if the subject is Third Person Singular (He, She, It, Ram).
  • Examples:
    • I play cricket.
    • He plays cricket.

2. Negative Sentences

  • Rule: Subject + do not / does not + V1 + Object
  • Use does not for He/She/It; do not for I/We/You/They.
  • Examples:
    • They do not like milk.
    • She does not eat meat. (Note: Remove 's/es' from the main verb when using 'does').

3. Interrogative (Question) Sentences

  • Rule: Do / Does + Subject + V1 + Object?
  • Examples:
    • Do you speak English?
    • Does he live in Delhi?
