Summary of 'We Are Not Afraid to Die' (Class 11)

The narrator (the author) had spent 16 years perfecting his seafaring skills, dreaming of recreating the voyage of Captain James Cook. In July 1976, he set sail from Plymouth, England with his wife Mary, and two children — Jonathan (6) and Suzanne (7) — aboard their boat Wavewalker. They also hired two professional crewmen, Larry Vigil and Herb Seigler, to help them cross the rough southern Indian Ocean.

For the first few months, the voyage was smooth. However, on January 2, near the island of Amsterdam, a massive storm struck. Massive 15-metre waves battered the boat. The narrator was swept overboard but miraculously survived. The boat was severely damaged — the hull was cracked, pumps were failing, and the boat was taking on water rapidly. Everyone worked desperately to save the ship.

The situation seemed hopeless. They were thousands of miles from land. Then the narrator's 7-year-old daughter Suzanne gave him a handwritten note that read: "We are not afraid of dying if we can all be together." This simple, brave sentence from his young daughter restored his courage.

His son Jonathan, despite his head injuries, quietly asked: "Daddy, have we started sinking?" instead of crying. The courage of his children inspired him not to give up.

The narrator calculated their exact position using navigational charts. Miraculously, his calculations led them to the tiny island of Ile Amsterdam in the South Indian Ocean, which they spotted exactly when they needed it. They were rescued and survived the ordeal.
