Key Facts

Sentences in the Present Perfect Continuous, Past Perfect Continuous, Future Continuous, and Future Perfect Continuous tenses CANNOT be converted into Passive Voice in standard English grammar.

Active vs. Passive Voice

  • Active Voice: The Subject performs the action. Format: Subject + Verb + Object Example: The cat (subject) ate (verb) the mouse (object).

  • Passive Voice: The Subject receives the action. Format: Object + Helping Verb + Past Participle (V3) + by + Subject Example: The mouse (object) was eaten (V3) by the cat (subject).

3 Golden Rules for Changing Voice

  1. Swap the Subject and Object: Bring the object to the front of the sentence and move the subject to the end.
  2. Always use V3: The main verb must ALWAYS be converted into its Past Participle form (e.g., write -> written, eat -> eaten, sing -> sung).
  3. Use the correct Helping Verb: Add 'is/are/am', 'was/were', 'been', or 'being' depending strictly on the Tense of the original active sentence.
