Waste Management: Types and Methods

1. Biodegradable Waste (जैव निम्नीकरणीय): Waste that can be decomposed by microorganisms (bacteria/fungi) naturally.

• Examples: Food scraps, vegetable peels, paper, wood, leaves.

2. Non-Biodegradable Waste (अजैव निम्नीकरणीय): Waste that does NOT decompose naturally and persists for hundreds of years.

• Examples: Plastic bags, glass bottles, aluminium cans, Styrofoam, e-waste.

The most important principle of waste management is the 3R Rule:

1. Reduce: Use less material in the first place.

• Use cloth bags instead of plastic bags.
• Buy only what you need.

2. Reuse: Use things again instead of discarding them.

• Reuse glass jars and bottles as containers.
• Donate old clothes.

3. Recycle: Process waste materials to make new products.

• Paper is recycled into cardboard.
• Plastic bottles are recycled into new products.
• Aluminium cans are melted and reused.

1. Composting: Converting biodegradable kitchen waste into organic manure (compost) for gardens.
2. Landfill: Burying waste in designated areas. (Not ideal — pollutes groundwater.)
3. Incineration: Burning waste at high temperatures. (Reduces volume but causes air pollution.)
4. Vermicomposting: Using earthworms to decompose organic waste into rich manure.
