भाषा को लेकर भारत में अक्सर एक बड़ा सवाल पूछा जाता है कि भारत की राजभाषा क्या है और भारत की राष्ट्रभाषा क्या है? इन दोनों शब्दों का अंतर समझना बहुत जरूरी है क्योंकि अधिकांश लोग इनमें भ्रमित हो जाते हैं।
2010 में गुजरात हाईकोर्ट ने एक अहम फैसला सुनाते हुए स्पष्ट रूप से कहा था कि भारत में ऐसा कोई कानून या संवैधानिक प्रावधान नहीं है जो हिंदी को भारत की 'राष्ट्रभाषा' (National Language) बनाता हो।

'राजभाषा' का मतलब होता है 'राज-काज की भाषा' यानी वह भाषा जिसका उपयोग केंद्र सरकार अपने आधिकारिक काम (Official work) के लिए करती है।
भारत की कोई भी राष्ट्रभाषा (National Language) नहीं है।
यह एक बहुत बड़ी गलतफहमी है कि हिंदी भारत की राष्ट्रभाषा है। भारतीय संविधान में किसी भी एक भाषा को 'राष्ट्रभाषा' का दर्जा नहीं दिया गया है।
हालांकि भारत की कोई एक राष्ट्रभाषा नहीं है, लेकिन भारतीय संविधान की 8वीं अनुसूची (8th Schedule) में भारत की 22 प्रमुख भाषाओं को मान्यता दी गई है। इनमें असमिया, बंगाली, गुजराती, हिंदी, कन्नड़, कश्मीरी, मलयालम, मराठी, उड़िया, पंजाबी, संस्कृत, सिंधी, तमिल, तेलुगु, उर्दू आदि शामिल हैं। सरकार इन सभी 22 भाषाओं के विकास के लिए समान रूप से जिम्मेदार है।
2011 की जनगणना के अनुसार, भारत की लगभग **43.6%** आबादी हिंदी को अपनी मातृभाषा के रूप में बोलती है, जो इसे भारत में सबसे ज्यादा बोली जाने वाली भाषा बनाता है।
