Key Facts

Democracy is not a magical solution to all problems like poverty. It only ensures that people take their own decisions.

A 'Representative Democracy' is the most common form today, where people elect representatives to govern on their behalf, rather than voting on every single law themselves.

1. What is Democracy?

  • Definition: Democracy is a form of government in which the rulers are elected by the people.
  • The word comes from the Greek word 'Demokratia' (Demos = People, Kratia = Rule).

2. Four Key Features of Democracy

Just holding an election doesn't make a country a true democracy (e.g., China or North Korea). A true democracy must have these features:

  1. Major decisions by elected leaders: The final decision-making power must rest with those elected by the people (Unlike Pakistan under General Musharraf, where the military held the real power).
  2. Free and fair electoral competition: Elections must offer a real choice between political parties. Those currently in power must have a fair chance of losing.
  3. One person, one vote, one value: Every adult citizen must have the right to vote, and each vote must carry the same weight.
  4. Rule of law and respect for rights: The government must rule within limits set by constitutional law and respect citizens' basic rights (freedom of speech, independent judiciary).

3. Demerits (Arguments Against Democracy)

  • Leaders keep changing, which leads to instability.
  • It is all about political competition and power play, leaving no room for morality.
  • So many people have to be consulted that it leads to massive delays in decision-making.
  • It leads to corruption, as it is based on electoral competition.

4. Merits (Why Democracy is the Best?)

  • Accountability: A democratic government is a better government because it is more accountable to the needs of the people.
  • Quality of Decisions: Because democracy involves consultation and discussion, the quality of decision-making improves.
  • Conflict Resolution: It provides a peaceful method to deal with differences and conflicts in a diverse society.
  • Enhances Dignity: It treats all citizens (rich, poor, educated, or uneducated) as equals.
  • Room for Correction: It allows us to correct our own mistakes (by voting the government out in the next election).
