What is a Diplomatic Passport (Maroon Passport)?

A Diplomatic Passport is a special travel document issued to authorized diplomats and top government officials.

• In India, it is easily recognizable by its deep Maroon (Dark Red) cover (unlike the standard citizen passport, which is Navy Blue).
• It is issued under 'Type D' (D stands for Diplomat).

Not every government employee gets this. It is highly restricted to:

• The President, Prime Minister, and Vice President of India.
• Union Cabinet Ministers and Chief Ministers of States.
• High-ranking Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officers and Ambassadors representing India in foreign embassies.
• Judges of the Supreme Court.

Carrying a maroon diplomatic passport grants several immense privileges under international law (The Vienna Convention):

• Visa-Free Travel: Diplomats do not need to wait for a tourist or business visa. They can fly into many countries instantly without prior approval.
• Airport VIP Treatment: They bypass regular customs and security checks. Their luggage cannot be searched, opened, or delayed by foreign airport security.
• Diplomatic Immunity: This is the biggest power. While in a foreign country, a diplomat is completely immune from foreign lawsuits and prosecution. They cannot be arrested or jailed by the foreign police, even if they commit a crime. (The host country can only declare them Persona non grata and kick them out).
