What Does 'Graduate with First Class' Mean?

In the Indian university system (which is heavily based on the British system), degrees are awarded in different classes based on your final aggregate percentage across all semesters:

1. First Class with Distinction: Usually awarded for an outstanding score of 75% or above.
2. First Class: Awarded to students scoring between 60% and 74.9%.
3. Second Class: Awarded for scores between 50% and 59.9%.
4. Third Class / Pass Class: Awarded for just scraping by with 40% to 49.9%.

Achieving a First Class degree is a massive milestone for a student's career.

• Corporate Hiring: Many top-tier IT companies (like TCS, Infosys, and Wipro) and multinational banks have a strict filter. They will not even allow you to sit for the campus interview if you do not have a 'First Class' degree.
• Government Jobs: Many UPSC exams and prestigious government banking jobs strictly require a minimum of 60% (First Class) just to fill out the application form.
• Higher Education: If you wish to study abroad at elite universities (like Oxford or MIT) for a Master's degree, a First Class Bachelor's is almost always a mandatory requirement.

While 60% is the standard rule across India, modern universities use the CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) system out of 10. In the CGPA system, a score of 6.0 or 6.5 CGPA (depending on the specific university's conversion formula) is generally recognized as a First Class equivalent.
