The Silbatta (рд╕рд┐рд▓рдмрдЯреНрдЯрд╛) is one of the oldest, most traditional kitchen tools in India. It is a flat stone slab (Sil) used with a smaller cylindrical roller stone (Batta) to grind spices, chutneys, and pastes manually.
The exact English name for Silbatta is a Grinding Stone or Stone Grinder. In formal culinary or archaeological texts, it is also called a Quern.
English Name: Grinding Stone / Stone Grinder.
Formal Term: Quern (archaeological/formal English).
Used For: Grinding spices, coconut, chutneys, and wet masalas.
Health Benefit: Stone-ground spices retain natural oils better than electric grinders.
The Silbatta consists of two parts:
Despite modern electric mixers and blenders, many Indian cooks prefer the Silbatta because grinding on stone maintains the natural oils in the spices without generating the heat of a motor. This gives the paste a deeper, richer, more authentic flavour.
Silbatta is called a 'Grinding Stone' or 'Stone Grinder' in English. The technical/formal name is 'Quern'.
The flat slab base is called 'Sil' and the rolling stone is called 'Batta'. Together they form the Silbatta.
