Key Facts

Rajasthan is the largest state in India by geographical area, while Goa is the smallest state. Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state.

The Current Count

As of 2020 (and remaining the same through 2022, 2023, and today), India officially consists of:

  • 28 States
  • 8 Union Territories (UTs)

Why did the numbers change?

Many older textbooks say India has 29 states and 7 UTs. Here is why that changed:

  1. The 2019 Change (Jammu & Kashmir): The state of Jammu & Kashmir was officially stripped of its statehood and bifurcated (split) into two separate Union Territories: J&K and Ladakh. (This reduced the number of states from 29 to 28, and increased the UTs from 7 to 9).

  2. The 2020 Change (Daman & Diu): To improve administrative efficiency, the Central Government merged two existing Union Territories (Daman & Diu) with (Dadra & Nagar Haveli) into a single, merged UT. (This reduced the number of UTs from 9 back down to 8).

List of 8 Union Territories

  1. Andaman and Nicobar Islands
  2. Chandigarh
  3. Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu
  4. Delhi (National Capital Territory)
  5. Jammu and Kashmir
  6. Ladakh
  7. Lakshadweep
  8. Puducherry
