Key Facts

The Indian Giant Squirrel almost never comes down to the ground. It spends its entire life high up in the tree canopy, eating fruits, nuts, bark, and insects.

The State Animal

The state animal of Maharashtra is the Indian Giant Squirrel.

In the local Marathi language, it is affectionately called Shekru (ā¤ļāĨ‡ā¤•⤰āĨ‚).

Physical Characteristics

Unlike the small grey squirrels you see in city parks, the Indian Giant Squirrel is truly giant!

  • Size: It can measure up to 3 feet long (head to the tip of its tail) and weigh about 2 kg.
  • Colour: It has a beautiful, striking coat that is usually a mix of two or three distinct colours: deep maroon/burgundy, rusty brown, and pale yellow/white.
  • Agility: It can easily leap distances of 6 meters (20 feet) from one tree branch to another.

Habitat

The Shekru is an arboreal (tree-dwelling) animal. It is completely dependent on the tall, dense canopy of the Western Ghats.

  • The best place to spot this elusive animal is the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary in the Pune district, which was specially created to protect its natural habitat.
