The Sabarimala pilgrimage is one of the world's largest annual human gatherings. Pamba is the base camp from which pilgrims trek to the sacred Ayyappa temple.
The Sabarimala pilgrimage attracts approximately 40โ50 million pilgrims annually, making it the second largest pilgrimage in the world after the Hajj to Mecca.
The main trekking route from Pamba: Pamba โ Neelimala โ Appachimedu โ Marakkoottam โ Sabarimala temple
The trek takes approximately 2โ3 hours for a healthy adult. The path runs through dense Periyar Tiger Reserve forest.
A separate route exists via Erumeli (70 km) โ pilgrims walk the entire way in a tradition called 'padayatra'.
The Sabarimala Ayyappa temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa (son of Shiva and Vishnu/Mohini). The pilgrimage season is during Mandalam (NovemberโDecember) and Makaravilakku (January). Pilgrims must observe 41 days of austerity (Mandalakaalam) before the pilgrimage.
A ropeway project has been proposed and debated for years but has NOT been implemented as of 2024, due to environmental concerns about the protected forest area.
