Key Facts

The Galwan Valley clashes of June 2020 in eastern Ladakh were the most serious military confrontation between India and China in over five decades, resulting in casualties on both sides.

Line of Actual Control (LAC)

The India-China border is officially known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). It is a boundary that de facto separates Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory.

The LAC is approximately 3,488 km long and runs along three sectors:

  1. Western Sector: Ladakh (most disputed โ€” Aksai Chin is controlled by China but claimed by India)
  2. Middle Sector: Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand (relatively peaceful)
  3. Eastern Sector: Arunachal Pradesh (China claims large parts of it as 'South Tibet')

The McMahon Line

The McMahon Line is the historical boundary established by British India and Tibet in the Simla Convention of 1914. It forms the basis of India's claim in the eastern sector.

China does NOT recognize the McMahon Line as a valid boundary, leading to the eastern border dispute, particularly over Arunachal Pradesh. This dispute directly led to the Sino-Indian War of 1962.
