Bhilai is located in the state of Chhattisgarh.

Before the year 2000, when the state of Madhya Pradesh was divided, Bhilai was a part of Madhya Pradesh. Today, it falls under the Durg district of Chhattisgarh and is situated about 30 kilometers west of the state capital, Raipur.

Bhilai and Durg are located so close to each other that they are collectively known as the Twin Cities of Chhattisgarh.

The identity of the city is deeply tied to the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP).

• It was established in 1955 with the technical and financial assistance of the Soviet Union (USSR) during India's Second Five-Year Plan.
• It is operated by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), a Maharatna public sector unit.
• The plant is renowned for being the sole manufacturer and supplier of the world-class, ultra-long railway rails used by the Indian Railways.

Because the steel plant brought highly skilled engineers and workers from all over India, Bhilai developed a highly educated, cosmopolitan culture (often called 'Mini India'). Today, it is famous for its coaching institutes and engineering colleges, acting as a major educational center for students preparing for national entrance exams like IIT-JEE.
