NSO Full Form — National Statistical Office

NSSO = National Sample Survey Organisation (old name, before 2019) NSO = National Statistical Office (new name, from May 2019)

Key change: In May 2019, the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) were merged to form the National Statistical Office (NSO).

So:

• CSO (Central Statistics Office) + NSSO → NSO (National Statistical Office) from 2019
• The 'NSSO' no longer exists as a separate entity

For exam purposes:

• NSO and NSSO refer to the same statistical organisation (pre-2019 = NSSO; post-2019 = NSO)
• Both full forms may be asked in exams

NSO (National Statistical Office) is the apex body for statistics in India:

1. GDP and National Accounts: Compiles and releases India's GDP data, GNP, NNP, and National Income statistics.

2. Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS): Annual/quarterly employment and unemployment data.

3. National Sample Survey (NSS): Large-scale household surveys on consumption, expenditure, health, education, housing.

4. Consumer Price Index (CPI): Monthly inflation data for urban and rural households.

5. Index of Industrial Production (IIP): Monthly data on industrial output.

6. Annual Survey of Industries (ASI)

7. Coordinating the National Statistical System

The NSO has two main divisions:

• Social Statistics Division (SSD) — social statistics (education, health, environment)
• Economic Statistics Division (ESD) — economic statistics (GDP, industry)
