A supercomputer is an incredibly powerful machine used for complex tasks like weather forecasting and space research. In the 1980s, India was denied this technology by the West. This led to a historic technological revolution in India.
First Supercomputer: PARAM 8000 (1991).
Organization: C-DAC (Pune).
Father of Indian Supercomputer: Dr. Vijay Bhatkar.
Current status: Today, India's fastest supercomputer is 'AIRAWAT', ranking among the top 100 globally.
The name of India's first indigenous (locally built) supercomputer is PARAM 8000.
In the late 1980s, India needed a supercomputer for weather forecasting. However, the USA refused to sell their 'Cray' supercomputer to India, fearing it would be used for nuclear research.
Taking this as a challenge, the Indian government set up C-DAC and appointed Dr. Vijay Bhatkar as its director. With a tiny budget and just a few years, Dr. Bhatkar and his team successfully built the PARAM 8000. It was not only successful, but it was cheaper and as powerful as the American machines.
Today, Dr. Vijay Bhatkar is proudly known as the 'Father of the Indian Supercomputer'.
The first supercomputer developed in India was the PARAM 8000. It was built in 1991 by C-DAC under the leadership of Dr. Vijay Bhatkar.
