What is the Main Festival of West Bengal?

Durga Puja (also known as Durgotsava) is an epic annual Hindu festival that reveres and pays homage to the warrior Goddess Durga.

• The Mythology: It celebrates the legendary, bloody battle where Goddess Durga (with her ten arms holding ten divine weapons) violently defeated the shape-shifting buffalo demon, Mahishasura, symbolizing the ultimate victory of Good over Evil.
• Timing: It is celebrated during the autumn season (Ashwin month), overlapping with the pan-Indian festival of Navaratri (usually September or October).

In West Bengal, especially in the city of Kolkata, Durga Puja is not just a religious event; it is the world's largest public art festival.

• Pandals: Local neighborhood committees build massive, temporary bamboo temples called 'Pandals' on the streets. These are not simple tents. They are breathtaking architectural masterpieces designed to look like the Eiffel Tower, ancient Egyptian pyramids, or underwater cities.
• Inside the pandal sits the beautifully sculpted clay idol of Goddess Durga (often riding a lion), along with her four children: Saraswati, Lakshmi, Ganesha, and Kartikeya.

During the five main days of the festival, normal life stops.

• Millions of people engage in 'Pandal Hopping'—walking through the streets all night long to admire the different art installations and lighting.
• It is a massive culinary festival. Streets are lined with food stalls selling Kolkata egg rolls, phuchka (pani puri), and traditional Bengali sweets like Rosogolla and Sandesh.

On the final day (Vijayadashami), married women perform 'Sindoor Khela', playfully smearing red vermilion powder on the goddess and each other's faces. Finally, in a deeply emotional parade filled with massive drum beats (Dhak) and dancing, the giant clay idols are carried to the Hooghly river and immersed in the water (Visarjan), symbolizing the goddess returning to her husband, Lord Shiva, in the Himalayas.
