'The Laburnum Top' is a beautiful and highly descriptive poem written by Ted Hughes (Class 11 English, Hornbill). It describes the mutual, symbiotic relationship between a silent, dying Laburnum tree and a vibrant Goldfinch bird.
The Laburnum tree (Amaltas in Hindi) is known for its beautiful, drooping yellow flowers, but its seeds and bark are highly poisonous. The goldfinch hides her babies there specifically because predators avoid the poisonous tree.
The poem opens on a September afternoon in Autumn. The Laburnum tree stands completely silent and still. Its leaves are turning yellow, and its seeds have fallen. The tree appears lifeless, sad, and practically dead.
Suddenly, a Goldfinch (a small, bright yellow bird) arrives at a branch end with a sudden chirp. As soon as she enters the thickness of the branches where her nest is hidden, the tree immediately comes alive. The young baby birds start chattering, shaking their wings, and making a loud, chaotic noise (like the starting of an 'engine').
The poet compares the bird to the engine of a machine. Just as an engine provides energy to start a machine, the mother Goldfinch brings food (fuel) to her young ones, bringing the entire dead tree to life with noise and movement.
After feeding her young, the mother bird moves to the end of the branch. With a delicate, mysterious whistle, she launches herself into the infinite blue sky. Once she leaves, the Laburnum tree immediately subsides back into complete silence and emptiness, becoming lifeless once again.
A goldfinch is entirely yellow, which perfectly camouflages her inside the yellow Laburnum tree. The only thing visible are the dark stripes (bars) on her face. These dark stripes act as a 'mask' that reveals her identity amidst the yellow leaves.
