Analytical Paragraph Class 10 — Format and Examples

An analytical paragraph has THREE parts in ONE paragraph:

1. INTRODUCTION (1–2 sentences): State what the data/diagram is about. Use: 'The given [bar graph/pie chart/table] depicts/shows/presents...' Example: 'The given bar graph depicts the percentage of students who preferred different subjects in a class of 100.'

2. BODY / ANALYSIS (5–7 sentences): Describe the data — mention the highest, lowest, and notable values. Make comparisons. Identify any trend or pattern. Use specific numbers and percentages from the data.

Useful phrases: • 'According to the data...' • 'It is evident/clear that...' • 'The highest/maximum percentage is...' • 'The lowest/minimum value is...' • 'In comparison to...' • 'Interestingly, ...' • 'A significant rise/fall can be seen...' • 'approximately', 'nearly', 'almost', 'slightly'

3. CONCLUSION (1–2 sentences): Draw an overall inference or conclusion from the data. Use: 'It can be concluded that...' / 'Overall, the data suggests that...'

DATA: A bar graph shows the percentage of Class 10 students who preferred different subjects: Maths — 35%, Science — 30%, English — 20%, Social Science — 10%, Hindi — 5%

SAMPLE ANALYTICAL PARAGRAPH:

The given bar graph depicts the subject preferences of Class 10 students, based on a survey of 100 students. It is evident that Maths is the most popular subject, preferred by 35% of students, followed closely by Science at 30%. English comes third with 20% of students choosing it as their favourite subject. Social Science accounts for only 10%, while Hindi is the least preferred subject with a mere 5% preference. A clear trend can be observed: Science and Maths together account for 65% of student preferences, suggesting that students are more inclined towards technical subjects. It can be concluded that while analytical subjects like Maths and Science dominate student interest, languages and social sciences receive comparatively lower preference.

DATA: A pie chart shows how a student spends 24 hours in a day: Sleep — 8 hours (33.3%), School — 6 hours (25%), Homework — 3 hours (12.5%), Play — 2 hours (8.3%), Screen time — 3 hours (12.5%), Other — 2 hours (8.3%)

SAMPLE PARAGRAPH:

The given pie chart presents how a student divides a 24-hour day among various activities. The largest portion of the day, 8 hours (33.3%), is spent on sleep, which is necessary for good health. School occupies the second largest share at 6 hours (25%). Homework and screen time each account for 3 hours (12.5%) of the day. Play and other activities together constitute approximately 16.6% of the day. It is notable that screen time equals the time spent on homework, raising questions about productive use of leisure time. Overall, the data suggests a fairly balanced daily routine, though increasing time for physical activity would be beneficial.
