Key Facts

If you apply for studies abroad, foreign universities will accept a provisional certificate conditionally, but you must submit the final degree as soon as your home university issues it.

What is a Provisional Certificate?

A Provisional Certificate is a temporary document issued by a university or board declaring that a student has successfully completed their course/degree and has passed all required examinations.

'Provisional' literally means 'arranged for the present, possibly to be changed later' — in this context, it means 'temporary until the permanent one arrives'.

Why is it Issued?

Universities usually take 6 months to 1 year after graduation to print and distribute the final, original Degree Certificates (often handed out during Convocation).

Since graduating students need immediate proof of their degree to apply for jobs or higher studies (Master's programs), the university issues a Provisional Certificate as an interim substitute.

Validity

A Provisional Certificate is fully valid for job applications, visas, and higher education admissions.

However, it comes with an expiration condition: It is valid ONLY until the university issues the final Original Degree. Once the original degree is issued, the provisional certificate becomes invalid.
