What is the Meaning of Chapri? (Indian Slang)

Today, Chapri is used as a derogatory (insulting) slang word. It is used to mock young people (usually teenagers) who try very hard to look 'cool' or stylish, but end up looking overly flashy, cringeworthy, or tasteless.

Characteristics often mocked as 'Chapri':

• Unnatural, brightly dyed hair (like neon green or blonde highlights).
• Wearing overly tight, unnecessarily ripped jeans with flashy, mismatched colors.
• Riding modified, loud bikes very rashly on the streets.
• Making cringeworthy lip-sync or slow-motion videos on social media to grab attention.

While today it is just a meme word for bad fashion sense, its origin is actually quite tragic. Historically, 'Chhapri' was a caste-based term used for a community of marginalized people whose profession was making 'chhappars' (temporary roofs made of bamboo and leaves). Because of this sensitive history, many people argue that using this word is classist and offensive.
