राजनीति (Politics) शब्द सुनते ही हमारे दिमाग में चुनाव, नेता और वादे आते हैं। लेकिन नागरिक शास्त्र (Civics) और राजनीति विज्ञान (Political Science) के अनुसार, राजनीति का अर्थ इससे कहीं अधिक गहरा है।

अर्थात: शासन चलाने की नीति या सही तरीके से राज्य (देश) का प्रबंधन करने की कला को राजनीति कहते हैं। अंग्रेज़ी शब्द Politics यूनानी शब्द 'Polis' (पोलिस) से बना है, जिसका अर्थ है 'नगर-राज्य' (City-State)।
