Molecular Formula: C4H4O4
IUPAC Name: (Z)-Butenedioic acid.
It is a dicarboxylic acid, meaning it has two heavy Carboxylic Acid groups (-COOH) attached to its carbon chain.
Geometric Isomer: Maleic acid is the 'Cis' isomer. This means both of the massive -COOH groups are physically located on the exact same side of the central Carbon-Carbon double bond (C=C).

Maleic vs Fumaric Acid

This is a highly repeated board exam question.
While Maleic acid is the 'Cis' version, its chemical twin is Fumaric Acid, which is the 'Trans' isomer (the -COOH groups are on violently opposite sides of the double bond).

Industrial Uses

Massive amounts of Maleic acid are industrially dehydrated (water is removed) using heat to create Maleic Anhydride.
