Who is the Father of Ecology?

Before Humboldt in the 1800s, scientists studied plants and animals in isolation, locking them in museums. Humboldt was the first scientist to realize that nature is a massive, interconnected web. During his legendary, dangerous expedition across the jungles and mountains of South America, he proved that a plant's survival is directly tied to the climate, altitude, and soil of its specific location. He essentially invented the concept of 'ecosystems', forever changing how humanity views nature.

While Humboldt laid the philosophical foundation, the American scientist Eugene Odum is famously known as the 'Father of Modern Ecology'. In the 1950s, Odum wrote the very first textbook on ecology, turning it from a niche philosophy into a strict, mathematical university science.

In the context of India, the undisputed Father of Indian Ecology is Professor Ramdeo Misra. He established the very first post-graduate course in ecology in India at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). His massive research on the tropical forests and grasslands of India laid the groundwork for the government to create laws protecting India's environment and wildlife.
