Spermatogenesis: Process and Diagram

Spermatogenesis is the process of the formation of male gametes (sperm cells or spermatozoa) from diploid germ cells inside the testes. It is a key topic in the Class 12 Biology chapter on Human Reproduction.

Question (Click to Flip)

What is spermatogenesis?

Answer

Spermatogenesis is the process of formation of haploid sperm cells from diploid spermatogonia inside the seminiferous tubules of the testes. It involves mitosis (multiplication), then meiosis (maturation), and finally spermiogenesis to form mature sperm.

Key Facts

Location: Seminiferous tubules of the testes.

Start cell: Spermatogonia (2n).

End cell: Spermatozoa (n โ€” haploid sperm).

Key Division: Meiosis is used (not mitosis) to halve the chromosome number.

Location

Spermatogenesis occurs inside the seminiferous tubules of the testes.

Stages of Spermatogenesis

The process occurs in four sequential stages:

Stage 1 โ€” Multiplication Phase:

  • Diploid (2n) cells called Spermatogonia (germinal epithelial cells) multiply repeatedly by Mitosis to increase their number.

Stage 2 โ€” Growth Phase:

  • The spermatogonia grow in size and become Primary Spermatocytes (2n โ€” still diploid).

Stage 3 โ€” Maturation Phase (Meiosis):

  • Primary Spermatocytes undergo Meiosis I โ†’ Two haploid (n) Secondary Spermatocytes.
  • Secondary Spermatocytes undergo Meiosis II โ†’ Four haploid (n) Spermatids.

Stage 4 โ€” Spermiogenesis:

  • Spermatids undergo structural transformation (they grow a tail/flagellum) and become mature Spermatozoa (sperm cells).
