Why Do We Celebrate Teachers' Day in India?

Teachers' Day in India is celebrated on September 5th every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was a distinguished philosopher, a renowned academician, the first Vice-President of India, and the second President of independent India. Despite his high political offices, he remained a dedicated teacher at heart throughout his life.

The tradition began in 1962, the year Dr. Radhakrishnan assumed the office of the President of India. A group of his students and friends approached him and requested his permission to celebrate his birthday on September 5th. Dr. Radhakrishnan humbly declined a personal celebration and instead suggested, "Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers' Day." His wish was honored, and the tradition continues to this day.

Beyond honoring Dr. Radhakrishnan, Teachers' Day is celebrated to acknowledge the immense contribution that educators make to society. Teachers are the architects of the future. They do not just impart academic knowledge; they mold character, instill values, and guide students toward becoming responsible, capable citizens. Celebrating this day is society's way of saying 'thank you' for their tireless and often underappreciated efforts.

It is important to note that while India celebrates its national Teachers' Day on September 5th, the international community observes World Teachers' Day exactly one month later, on October 5th. World Teachers' Day was established by UNESCO in 1994 to focus on global educational standards and the rights of educators.
