UNIVAC Full Form — History of the Universal Automatic Computer

The UNIVAC I was designed by J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly, the visionary engineers who previously built the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) for the United States military during World War II. They founded the Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation and delivered the first UNIVAC I to the United States Census Bureau on March 31, 1951.

As a first-generation computer, UNIVAC relied on vacuum tubes—specifically, it contained about 5,200 of them. It was a massive machine, weighing around 16,000 pounds (over 7,200 kg) and consumed a tremendous amount of electricity (125 kW). Despite its size, it was revolutionary because it could handle both numbers and alphabetical characters equally well, making it 'universal' for both scientific calculation and business data processing.

UNIVAC became a household name on November 4, 1952. During the U.S. presidential election, CBS News used a UNIVAC computer to predict the outcome of the race between Dwight D. Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson. Based on just a small percentage of early voting data, UNIVAC correctly predicted an Eisenhower landslide, a result that defied human pollsters who expected a close race. This event drastically shifted public perception of computer technology.

UNIVAC paved the way for the commercial computing industry. It introduced magnetic tape for data storage, replacing the cumbersome punch-card systems previously used. Only 46 units of the UNIVAC I were ever built, but its impact laid the foundation for the modern digital age.
