Famous Festivals of Tamil Nadu

By far the most massive and important festival in Tamil Nadu is Pongal. Celebrated in January, it is a four-day thanksgiving festival dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and farm cattle for providing a successful agricultural harvest. The highlight of the festival involves boiling newly harvested rice with milk and jaggery in a traditional clay pot until it overflows, shouting 'Pongalo Pongal!', symbolizing overwhelming abundance and prosperity.

Puthandu marks the beginning of the Tamil calendar year, usually falling on the 14th of April. People clean their houses, draw beautiful Kolams (rangoli) at their doorsteps, and prepare a special dish called Mango Pachadi. This unique dish mixes sweet jaggery, sour mango, and bitter neem flowers, reminding people that the new year will bring a mix of both joyful and difficult moments.

Thaipusam is a visually stunning and intense religious festival dedicated to Lord Murugan (the God of War). Devotees undergo massive physical penance to prove their devotion. They carry heavy structures called Kavadis on their shoulders and often pierce their skin, cheeks, and tongues with sharp metal skewers as they march towards the temple, completely unfazed by pain due to their deep spiritual trance.

Often called the 'Festival of Lights' of Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated in November/December. Millions of small clay oil lamps (Agal Vilakku) are lit inside and outside houses, and a massive fire is lit atop the sacred Arunachala hill in Tiruvannamalai to worship Lord Shiva.
