Key Facts

Full Form: PDCA stands for Plan-Do-Check-Act.

Creator/Popularizer: W. Edwards Deming.

Purpose: Continuous process improvement and problem-solving.

Nature: Iterative (it is a continuous loop, not a one-time project).

The 4 Phases of the Deming Cycle

1. Plan

  • Identify the problem or opportunity for improvement.
  • Analyze the current process, establish objectives, and develop a detailed plan of action to achieve the desired results.

2. Do

  • Execute the plan on a small scale or in a controlled environment (a pilot project).
  • This limits the impact if the plan does not work as expected.

3. Check

  • Monitor and evaluate the results of the pilot project against the objectives established in the 'Plan' phase.
  • Identify what worked, what didn't, and why.

4. Act (or Adjust)

  • If the results are successful, implement the new process on a larger scale and make it the new standard.
  • If the results are not satisfactory, adjust the plan and start the cycle over again at 'Plan'.

Why is it called a Cycle?

The Deming Cycle is a loop. Once you reach the 'Act' phase and establish a new baseline, you immediately start looking for the next area to improve, starting the 'Plan' phase all over again. This ensures Continuous Improvement (Kaizen).
