What does CNF mean in an Indian Railway Ticket?

If you check your PNR status online and the current status says 'CNF', you can breathe a sigh of relief. It means your seat booking has been completely Confirmed. The railway has officially blocked a specific seat or berth for your journey. You are guaranteed a place to sit (and sleep, if it's a sleeper or AC coach) on the train.

Sometimes, your ticket might say 'CNF' but there is no coach or seat number written next to it. Do not panic. This usually happens when you book a confirmed ticket long before the journey. The railways guarantee you a seat, but the exact seat number will be assigned during the chart preparation, which typically happens 4 hours before the train departs. You will receive an SMS with your exact Coach and Berth number at that time.

To fully understand your ticket, you must know the difference between the three main booking states:

• CNF (Confirmed): You get a full, guaranteed berth to sleep on.
• RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation): You are allowed to board the train, but you do not get a full sleeping berth. You have to share a side-lower seat with another RAC passenger (sitting only). You will only get a full berth if a CNF passenger cancels their ticket or doesn't show up.
• WL (Waiting List): You are not allowed to board a reserved coach. If your ticket remains in WL after the chart is prepared, the ticket is automatically cancelled and the money is refunded.
