Young India: The Historic Journal by Mahatma Gandhi

Gandhi used Young India not merely as a newspaper, but as a platform to educate the masses. He wrote extensively about his political campaigns, social reforms (like the eradication of untouchability), and his vision for a free India. It allowed him to directly communicate his motives behind major movements, such as the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Civil Disobedience Movement, ensuring his message was not distorted by British-controlled media.

The journal was so effective at mobilizing public opinion against British rule that the colonial government viewed it as a major threat. In 1922, Gandhi was arrested and tried for sedition specifically because of three politically charged articles he had written and published in Young India. He famously pleaded guilty, stating that it was his moral duty to protest against an unjust government.

While Young India catered to the English-speaking population, Gandhi also published parallel journals to reach different demographics. Navajivan was published in Gujarati and Hindi. Later, in 1933, he started Harijan, which focused intensely on social reform and the upliftment of the lower castes.
