Key Facts

Ram Prasad Bismil wrote the famous revolutionary song 'Sarfaroshi Ki Tamanna' ('The Desire for Self-Sacrifice'), which became an anthem of the Indian freedom movement.

9 August also marks the anniversary of the Quit India Movement (1942). This coincidence gave the date double significance in India's independence history.

The Event

The train robbery was planned and executed by members of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA), led by Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan (who remains a celebrated symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity in the freedom struggle).

The Plan: The revolutionaries stopped Train No. 8 Down (the Saharanpur-Lucknow passenger train) by pulling the chain at Kakori station and looted the British government's cash (revenue) that was being transported in the train's cash box.

The Purpose: To use the money to purchase weapons for the armed revolution against British rule.

Aftermath and Significance

The British government responded with a massive crackdown. 40 revolutionaries were arrested and four were hanged:

  1. Ram Prasad Bismil (19 December 1927, Gorakhpur Jail)
  2. Ashfaqullah Khan (19 December 1927, Faizabad Jail)
  3. Roshan Singh (19 December 1927)
  4. Rajendra Nath Lahiri (17 December 1927, Gonda Jail)

The Kakori Kand galvanized the revolutionary movement and inspired a new generation of revolutionaries, including the young Bhagat Singh.
