What is a Globe? (Short Answer)

A Globe is a true, three-dimensional miniature model of the Earth.

Unlike a flat paper map which distorts shapes, a globe accurately shows the exact shape, size, and location of the Earth's continents, countries, oceans, and islands just as they actually exist in reality.

If you look closely at a globe, you will notice a few important features:

1. The Axis: The globe is not perfectly straight. It is mounted on a metal needle or rod and tilted at an angle (23.5 degrees). This tilted needle represents the Earth's imaginary Axis of rotation.
2. The Poles: The two extreme points where the needle passes through the globe are the North Pole (top) and the South Pole (bottom).
3. The Grid: You will see thin lines drawn all over it. The horizontal lines are Latitudes (like the Equator), and the vertical lines are Longitudes. Together, they help us find the exact address of any place on Earth.

While a globe is the most accurate model, it has a few practical problems compared to a map:

• It is bulky, heavy, and very difficult to carry in a school bag.
• You cannot see the entire world at one glance (you have to spin it to see the other side).
• It is not detailed enough. You cannot use a standard school globe to find a small town or street.
