When looking at a map of a coastline, you will often see large bodies of water that look like lakes, but are located right next to the ocean. In Geography, these unique, protected water bodies are called Lagoons.
Not all lagoons are made by sand! In places like the Maldives or the Pacific Ocean, islands are surrounded by a ring of growing coral. This coral ring (called an Atoll) acts as the barrier, trapping a stunningly clear, bright blue lagoon inside it.
A Lagoon is a shallow body of salt water (or brackish water) that is separated from the deeper, massive ocean by a thin, natural physical barrier.
This barrier acts like a protective wall. It can be made of sand (a sandbar), mud, pebbles, or even a living coral reef. Because of this barrier wall, the water inside the lagoon is very calm and peaceful, completely protected from the violent, crashing waves of the open ocean.
Most coastal lagoons are formed over thousands of years by ocean currents.
India has an incredibly massive coastline and is home to some of the largest lagoons in the world:
It is usually **Brackish** (a mix of both). Since a lagoon usually has a tiny opening connecting it to the sea, salty ocean water mixes with fresh rainwater or river water flowing into the lagoon.
