The Tamraparni River (also spelled as Thamirabarani) is a major river in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It holds immense geographical, agricultural, and historical significance for the deep south of India.
Ancient Sangam literature in Tamil is filled with romantic and reverent poems dedicated to the Thamirabarani River and the majestic Pothigai hills from which it flows.
Unlike most rivers in South India (like the Kaveri or Krishna) which are rain-fed and often dry up during extreme summers, the Tamraparni is a perennial river (water flows through it all year round).
Why? Because its origin in the Agasthyamalai hills receives rainfall from BOTH the South-West Monsoon (June to Sept) and the North-East Monsoon (Oct to Dec).
The famous **Banatheertham Falls** and **Kalyanatneertham Falls** are located on the Tamraparni river near its origin in the Western Ghats.
