The Panj Pyare (เจชเฉฐเจ เจชเจฟเจเจฐเฉ) โ the Five Beloved Ones โ are the most sacred figures in Sikh history. Their story marks the birth of the Khalsa Panth in 1699.
The Panj Pyare tradition continues today โ five initiated Sikhs (Amritdhari Khalsa) conduct the Amrit Sanchar (initiation) ceremony at any Gurdwara.
At the Baisakhi gathering on 30 March 1699 at Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh Ji asked the massive assembly: 'Who among you is willing to give their head for the Guru and the faith?'
After a terrifying pause, Daya Ram (later Bhai Daya Singh) stepped forward. Guru Ji took him inside a tent. Then called again โ four more volunteers stepped forward one by one.
All five were initiated into the Khalsa โ the pure brotherhood. Guru Ji himself then took initiation from these five, declaring them his Gurus.
The five came from five different castes and five different regions of India โ symbolising that the Khalsa has no caste, creed, or regional identity. Only devotion and courage matter.
Khalsa comes from Arabic 'khalis' meaning pure. The Khalsa is the community of initiated (Amritdhari) Sikhs who follow the Rehat Maryada (code of conduct) established by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
