Kashmiri Traditional Dress (Pheran) and Lok Kala

The traditional outfit worn by both men and women in the Kashmir valley is called the Pheran (or Phiran).

• What is it?: It is a long, loose, cloak-like woollen garment that falls below the knees.
• Purpose: It is specifically designed to combat the bitter cold of the Kashmiri winters. Because it is so loose, people comfortably carry a Kangri (an earthen pot filled with hot charcoal) underneath it to keep their bodies warm.
• Design: Women's Pherans are often beautifully embroidered with bright floral patterns (called Zari or Aari work) around the neck and bottom edges, while men's Pherans are usually plain.

Lok Kala (लोक कला) translates to Folk Art.

• Definition: It refers to the traditional art forms created by the common people (folk) of a specific region or tribe, passed down through generations without formal schooling.
• Forms: It includes traditional paintings, pottery, toys, and crafts.
• Famous Examples:
  • Madhubani painting from Bihar.
  • Warli painting from Maharashtra.
  • Pattachitra from Odisha.
