Key Facts

In one story, Durvasa tried to curse King Ambarisha, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Vishnu's weapon, the Sudarshana Chakra, protected the King and chased the terrified Durvasa across the universe until the sage apologized.

His name 'Durvasa' literally means 'one with whom it is difficult to live' or 'ill-dressed'.

1. Who was He? (Birth and Origin)

  • Durvasa was the son of Sage Atri and Anasuya.
  • According to the Puranas, he is considered a direct partial incarnation (Amshavatar) of Lord Shiva.
  • Because he was born from Shiva's fierce, destructive aspect (Rudra), Durvasa naturally possessed an extremely short temper and fiery anger.

2. Famous for his Deadly Curses

Durvasa Rishi was a master of powerful penance (Tapasya). Because of his spiritual power, his words became absolute reality. If anyone disrespected him, made him wait, or failed to serve him proper food, he would instantly curse them, ruining their lives.

The Curse on Shakuntala (Mahabharata)

  • This is his most famous curse. Once, Durvasa visited the ashram where the beautiful Shakuntala lived. She was lost in daydreams about her lover, King Dushyanta, and failed to notice the sage or welcome him.
  • Insulted, Durvasa cursed her: "The person you are thinking of will completely forget who you are."
  • King Dushyanta lost his memory, leading to years of tragedy for Shakuntala until a magical ring broke the curse.

3. The Boon to Kunti

Despite his anger, if someone served him perfectly, he gave incredible blessings.

  • When Princess Kunti was young, she served Durvasa with flawless devotion and immense patience for a whole year.
  • Pleased, he gave her a secret magical mantra (a boon). With this mantra, Kunti could call upon any God and have a child with them. She later used this boon to give birth to Karna and the mighty Pandavas.

4. Testing the Gods

Durvasa's anger spared no one, not even the Gods. He once cursed Lord Indra (King of Gods) for disrespecting a garland, causing the Gods to lose all their wealth and power. This ultimately led to the famous 'Samudra Manthan' (Churning of the Ocean) to get the wealth back.
