It was established way back in 1929 during British rule, making it one of the oldest commissions in India.

The Major TNPSC Exams

The commission divides its recruitment exams into different 'Groups' based on the salary and rank of the officer:

  1. Group 1: The toughest and most prestigious exam. It recruits Deputy Collectors, Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP), and District Registrars.
  2. Group 2 & 2A: Recruits Municipal Commissioners, Sub-Registrars, and Assistants in various state ministries.
  3. Group 4: The most popular exam with lakhs of applicants. It recruits Village Administrative Officers (VAO), Junior Assistants, Typists, and Steno-Typists. (The minimum qualification for Group 4 is usually just passing the 10th standard SSLC).
