What do you think a telebook is? (The Fun They Had)

In the classic sci-fi story 'The Fun They Had' by Isaac Asimov (Class 9 English), the characters Margie and Tommy live in the futuristic year of 2157. In their world, physical paper books no longer exist. Instead, their education relies entirely on something called a 'Telebook'.

Who was the teacher in Margie's world?

Answer

In 2157, Margie did not go to a school building or have a human teacher. Her teacher was a Mechanical Teacherโ€”a large, black, ugly robot with a screen that stood in her bedroom and gave her tests every single day at the exact same time.

Key Facts

Isaac Asimov wrote this story way back in 1951! At that time, computers were the size of entire rooms and the internet didn't exist. Yet, he brilliantly predicted the invention of digital screens, e-books, and online learning decades before they became a reality.

The Answer: What is a Telebook?

A 'Telebook' (Television-Book) is a digital, electronic book that is displayed on a television screen or a computer monitor.

Instead of physically turning paper pages, the words in a telebook move across the screen automatically. It is basically the futuristic version of what we today call an e-book, Kindle, or a PDF document reading on a tablet.

Why were the children confused?

In the story, 13-year-old Tommy finds a very old, dusty, physical paper book in his attic. When 11-year-old Margie looks at it, she is completely shocked and confused.

  • The difference: In her everyday telebook, the text constantly scrolls and moves across the screen. But in this old paper book, the words were completely still. When she turned the page back, it had the exact same words on it that it had before! To a child of 2157, a physical book that didn't move or change was a very "funny" and strange thing.

Tommy's Opinion on Paper Books

Tommy thought the old paper book was a complete "waste." He argued that once you finish reading a paper book, you have to throw it away because it is useless. He proudly stated that his computer screen held millions of telebooks inside it, and he would never have to throw his screen away.
