'The Tiger King' by Kalki (R. Krishnamurthy) is a brilliant satirical short story from the Class 12 English Vistas textbook. It is a darkly comic tale about power, arrogance, and the inevitability of fate.
Author: Kalki (famous Tamil writer).
The Prophecy: Killed by the hundredth tiger.
The Irony: He is killed by a wooden toy tiger, not a real one.
Theme: The futility of trying to cheat fate; the arrogance of power.
The Maharaja of Pratibandapuram is told at birth by astrologers that he will be killed by the hundredth tiger. Determined to defeat fate, he decides to hunt and kill one hundred tigers before this can happen.
The Maharaja (called the 'Tiger King') kills ninety-nine tigers. He stops hunting in his own state because tigers run out, and marries a princess from a state with many tigers just to hunt them. He pressures and eventually fires a British officer's request for a photo with a tiger.
For the hundredth tiger, he shoots but misses. His attendants secretly kill the weak tiger to save themselves. Later, the Maharaja buys his son a cheap wooden tiger toy. A splinter from the toy enters his hand, causes an infection, and he dies โ ironically killed by the hundredth tiger (a toy).
The story satirizes the arrogance of rulers who believe they can outsmart fate and nature. The irony is devastating: he defeats ninety-nine real tigers but is killed by a wooden one.
The stars predicted at his birth that he would die because of the hundredth tiger.
A wooden splinter from a cheap toy tiger he gifted his son entered his hand, caused a severe infection, and he died โ ironically killed by the hundredth tiger.
