Summary of 'The Adventure' (Class 11 English)

The story revolves around Professor Gangadharpant Gaitonde, a renowned historian. While walking in Pune, he is hit by a truck and goes into a coma. During this unconscious state, his mind transitions into a 'Parallel Universe' where history had taken a completely different turn.

In this parallel world, the Professor travels to Bombay and visits a library to read history books. He discovers a shocking difference: In our real world, the Marathas lost the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761. But in this parallel universe, the Marathas had won the battle! Because of this victory, India never fell under the rule of the British East India Company. Instead, India became a powerful, self-reliant democratic nation.

When the Professor wakes up from his coma in the real world, he tells his friend Rajendra Deshpande about his experience. Rajendra explains this using two scientific theories:

1. Catastrophe Theory: A small change in a crucial event (like a bullet missing the Maratha leader Vishwasrao) drastically changed the course of history.
2. Quantum Theory: In quantum physics, reality can exist in multiple states simultaneously. The Professor's mind simply made a 'transition' into an alternate reality where the outcome of the battle was different.
